Halcyon
The intelligence layer — from data to decisions.
The brain behind the data. Ecological modeling, threshold forecasting, intelligence that tells you what the data means.
What Is Halcyon
Halcyon is Astraeus's ecosystem intelligence platform. It takes the raw data from Watchline sensors (and other sources) and runs ecological models that produce actionable forecasts for coastal operators.
The critical distinction: Most ocean monitoring gives you data. Halcyon gives you intelligence.
What Halcyon Does That Raw Data Doesn't
Ecological Modeling
Halcyon doesn't just track physical parameters ; it models biological systems. It understands how temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, rainfall, tidal cycles, and runoff interact to create the conditions that matter to your operation.
Example:
A DO sensor tells you dissolved oxygen is 6.2 mg/L right now.’
Halcyon tells you that given the current temperature trend, tidal phase, and 48-hour rainfall forecast, there's a 35% probability DO drops below the 5.0 mg/L regulatory threshold within 72 hours.
Multi-Parameter Integration
Real ecosystem events aren't caused by one variable. A shellfish closure happens because rainfall → runoff → fecal coliform exceedance → DOH action. A HAB event develops because temperature + nutrients + stratification + light → bloom.
Halcyon integrates multiple data streams to model these cause-and-effect chains before they reach critical thresholds.
Threshold-Based Forecasting
Halcyon converts environmental data into the specific regulatory and operational thresholds that determine whether you can harvest, whether your port is in compliance, whether your kelp farm is in optimal growing conditions.
Example:
Generic forecasting: "60% chance of rain tomorrow."
Decision Support
Halcyon doesn't generate reports for scientists. It generates alerts and forecasts for operators:
"Harvest window: favorable conditions expected through Thursday. Risk increases Friday PM."
"Runoff event forecast: 40% probability of exceeding fecal coliform threshold within 48 hours following predicted rainfall."
"Growing conditions at Site B currently optimal. Site A trending toward hypoxic threshold."
Halcyon integrates multiple data streams to model these cause-and-effect chains before they reach critical thresholds.
Halcyon forecasting:
"23% probability that cumulative rainfall exceeds 2 inches, triggering the fecal coliform threshold that causes a DOH growing area closure within 72 hours."
How Halcyon and Watchline work together
Watchline is the eye
Collects continuous, high-quality environmental data at your site
Halcyon is the brain
Integrates that site-specific data with forecasts, models, and historical baselines to produce intelligence you can act on
Think of it like this: Watchline gives you the best possible view of what's happening in your water right now. Halcyon tells you what that means for your operation tomorrow and next week.
What It Measures
Temperature
1
Water temp drives shellfish growth rates, HAB development, species distribution, and regulatory thresholds
Dissolved Oxygen
2
DO levels below threshold trigger hypoxic events that kill shellfish and fish — early warning is critical
Chlorophyll-a
3
Proxy for phytoplankton density — indicates food availability for shellfish AND potential harmful algal bloom development
GPS / Position
4
Tracks equipment location for farmers (is my gear still there?), monitors drift, reduces theft/loss risk
Platform Capabilities
Watchline isn't a repurposed open-ocean weather buoy with sensors bolted on. Every parameter we measure was selected because coastal farmers, port managers, and resource managers told us they needed it.

“A shellfish farmer doesn’t need wave spectra optimized for cargo routing. They need to know if dissolved oxygen is trending toward a threshold that triggers a DOH closure. That’s a fundamentally different product.”
